JAZZ, POETRY, AND WINE
Poet Joe Mills joins Triad jazz musicians for evening of music and
spoken word featuring North Carolina wines

The Carolina Chamber Symphony Players final concert of the 2008-2009 season will celebrate wine and the coolness of beatnik culture through words, music, and wine samplings on June 13 at 8 p.m. in Old Salem. Bassist Matt Kendrick and other Triad jazz musicians will perform bebop classics as well as standards such as “The Days of Wine and Roses,” with poet Joe Mills reading his from his work, including selections from his Press 53 book Angels, Thieves, and Winemakers.  The event is co-sponsored by the Carolina Chamber Symphony Players, Press 53, Hanover Park Vineyard, and Old Salem Museums and Gardens.

The evening begins with a cash bar featuring wines from Hanover Park Vineyard, a noted Yadkinville winery. Michael and Amy Helton started Hanover Park Vineyard in 1996 in the heart of the Yadkin Valley. They now produce over 2000 cases annually of celebrated and Old-World inspired wines.  

The concert portion of “Jazz, Poetry, and Wine” will take place at 8 p.m. in the James A. Gray Auditorium at the Old Salem Visitors Center, with the wine cash bar beginning at 7:30 in the lobby area.

Press 53 is a small independent publisher of literary fiction, poetry, and nonfiction that was founded in October 2005. Located in Winston-Salem, Press 53 publishes full-length books by both new and established writers and reissues out-of-print books via its Press 53 Classics imprint.
